» Cable Internet-
Runs through a cable modem, or an eMTA. Internet runs through your cable TV lines,
then outside to the Cable poles. Cable internet has an “always on” connection,
meaning you don’t have to log in each time; you just turn on the PC and your surfing the web.
Examples: Comcast, Time Warner, Service electric, Westinghouse.
» DSL Internet-
(Digital Subscriber Line) Runs through a DSL modem which uses the same phone lines as a land-line phone does,
thus giving you slower internet speeds than cable and causing you to log in each time.
Examples: Embarq, Direct TV, Dish.
» Dial-Up Internet-
Is a direct connection to your land-line phone wires, which requires a phone service and a phone number. Also you have to dial-up each time you want to go online. This is the slowest of the ways to go online and is beginning to be phased out.
Examples: AOL, NetZero, Juno, MSN.
*There are other types out there, but these are the most common ones.*
